The tech world is buzzing with excitement as Sony prepares to announce its next big fighter, the Xperia 1.5. With a teaser trailer already released and a presentation scheduled for May 11th, Sony fans are eagerly awaiting the unveiling of this highly anticipated device.

A Familiar Design with a Notable Difference

Renderings of the Xperia 1.5 have been circulating for over two months, revealing a design that closely resembles its predecessors. However, an official advertisement spotted in Hong Kong showcases a noticeable difference - a triple rear camera setup with a vertical orientation. This flagship handset bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor, but with a distinctive feature - a more prominent oval-shaped camera island.

This advertisement raises expectations for improved camera capabilities, particularly in low-light settings. The message on the billboard, "One for all lights," automatically hints at Sony's efforts to enhance the camera's performance in high-noise environments. An improved camera sensor with low noise levels is rumored to be on the cards, with previous reports suggesting that Sony may include the amx989 sensor for its main camera. However, it is also possible that the company may opt for the imx858 sensor, as it is the only platform that supports the new low-noise ln2 mode in combination with the MCS synchronization system for multi-camera setups.

Unleashing New Camera Technology

The imx858 sensor from Sony implements a new architecture of sensor technologies. Instead of using photodiodes and pixel transitions on a single plane or substrate, these elements are stacked on top of each other. In simple terms, this configuration is expected to expand the dynamic range and enable the sensor to capture more light. If the Xperia 1.5 indeed adopts the amx858 sensor, it could offer a new level of camera performance in low-light conditions.

It will undoubtedly be interesting to see how the Xperia 1.5 fares in comparison to other flagship devices, such as the 13 Ultra. While leaks suggest that the phone will feature a similar design and the same 6.5-inch screen size, along with a 5000mAh battery, there might be a potential upgrade in terms of RAM. The Xperia 1.5 is rumored to come with 16GB of RAM, surpassing the current model's 12GB.

Awaiting Availability and Possible Surprises

Sony has been known to release its phones for sale some time after their official announcement, so even though the Xperia 1.5 will soon be unveiled, it may take a few months before it hits the shelves. However, there may be other surprises in store during the presentation. Speculation suggests that Sony might also showcase additional phones, potentially the Xperia 10 Mark 5. It would follow a similar pattern to last year when the Xperia 10 Mark 4 was released alongside the Xperia 1 Mark 4.

Interestingly, Google is also expected to unveil new devices at its upcoming event, Google IO 2023, starting on May 10th. Rumors suggest that we may see the Pixel 7A and Pixel Fall smartphones, as well as a Pixel tablet. It seems odd that Sony has chosen to release its flagship phone immediately after Google's event, but for smartphone enthusiasts, this promises to be an exciting couple of days.
