Hey there, everyone! How's it going today? I hope you're feeling super because I am thrilled to have the opportunity to present the DeVane Lectures. And let me tell you, these lectures are not your average snooze-fest. Nope, they're a regular course at Yale University that students can take for credits, but they're also open to the general public. So, whether you're a student or just a curious soul, get ready to dive into the fascinating world of power and politics in today's modern society.

The Rollercoaster of the Past 30 Years: Buckle Up, Buttercup!

Now, let's talk about the past three decades, shall we? These years have been a whirlwind of mind-boggling changes, unlike anything we've seen before. Seriously, it's been one heck of a ride! If we compare it to the previous four decades in most advanced capitalist democracies, it's like comparing a lazy river to a raging tsunami. The post-World War II era was a time of relative stability and prosperity, especially in countries like Europe, thanks to the Marshall Plan. It was a period of political stability and economic growth, unlike anything we've seen since 1989.

But hold on tight because things took a sharp turn in 1989. The world hit the fast-forward button, and boy, did it change! We witnessed an incredible transformation in just three short decades. And that's exactly what I'm here to explore with you. But before we dive in, let's address a little challenge.

Bridging the Generation Gap: From Yesterday to Today

Now, here's the thing. Some of us in this room have lived through the past three decades, and for us, it feels like yesterday. We experienced it in real-time, baby! But there are also many folks here who were born long after those events. For them, whether it's the past 40 or 60 years, it's all history. So, one of my goals is to transport everyone back in time, to make those who weren't there understand what it was like and remind those who lived it of things they may have forgotten.

So, let's take a little trip back to 1989, right in the heart of Berlin. Picture this: the Berlin Wall, which once divided East and West, is turning into a relic of the past. Can you feel the excitement in the air? Cue the music! Now, imagine Dan Rather, live in front of the Brandenburg Gate, reporting the joyous celebration of the symbolic dismantling of the Berlin Wall. It's a momentous occasion, my friends!

The fall of the Berlin Wall was just the tip of the iceberg. Throughout 1989, massive resistance movements erupted in Eastern Europe, and the Soviet Union's grip on the region began to crumble. It was a time of liberation, a break from decades of totalitarian control. The winds of change were blowing, and it seemed like democracy was on the rise. From the democratization of Eastern Europe to the peaceful transition in South Africa and the potential resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the early 1990s were a time of unprecedented optimism.

The Brave New World: Democracy, Institutions, and Insecurity

But wait, there's more! Our journey doesn't end there. Fast-forward to the post-9/11 world, and things take a different turn. State capitalism rises, China expands its activities in Africa, and Russia reclaims its position as a global power player. The dynamics of the global order shift once again, and new challenges arise.

We can't ignore the impact of the financial crisis either. Governments bailed out the elites while leaving the economic insecurities of their citizens unaddressed. It's a classic case of "Oops, we messed up!" But fear not, my friends, for there's still hope on the horizon.

From Misdiagnosis to Potential Solutions: Let's Fix This!

In the final leg of our journey, we'll tackle the misdiagnosis of voter sentiment by political elites and the failure of political reforms to alleviate economic insecurity. It's time to roll up our sleeves and dive into economic policies and political system reforms. We'll explore potential solutions, my friends!

The course comprises 25 mind-blowing lectures that will challenge your thinking and ignite your curiosity. And hey, if you're a Yale student or a community member, you can even attend office hours with the incredible Christina Seyfreid, the head teaching fellow. And guess what? Some of those sessions will be recorded and shared on the course website, so you won't miss a thing!

Get Ready to Expand Your Mind!

So, get ready to embark on this thrilling intellectual adventure! We'll cover everything from the collapse of communism to the rise of neoliberalism, the transition to a unipolar world, and the evolution of the global order. We'll dive into the spread of democracy throughout history and explore the new politics of insecurity triggered by the financial crisis.

This course is all about merging politics with the pursuit of good public policy. It's about understanding the world we live in and envisioning a better future. So, buckle up, my friends, because we're about to embark on a journey that will challenge your thinking, ignite your passion, and open your mind to the incredible complexities of our modern world.

Stay tuned for the next lecture, where we'll dive into the collapse of communism and the birth of a new era. Get ready to have your mind blown, because this is just the beginning!
