Gonzalo Ceja: Conciertos Didáctico-Educativos.
In the ancient town of Amatlán, the sun was born in the year 13 Reed. A year later, in the year 1 Rabbit, our music came to life. For over 35 years, I have been organizing educational concerts that focus on bringing the fascinating history and ancient knowledge of Mexico to children and young adults. Using pre-Columbian instruments and sounds from nature, I create immersive experiences that go beyond traditional folkloric performances and mainstream media. Music becomes a powerful tool for both teaching and celebrating our indigenous cultures and natural heritage.
During pre-Hispanic times, music reached a level of development comparable to, or even surpassing, other contemporary European and Asian cultures. The evidence lies in the vast array of musical instruments found in archaeological excavations and preserved artifacts. Music, dance, and singing were essential elements of the customs and beliefs of pre-American peoples. However, what we now hear as "prehistoric music" is an approximation crafted from literary sources, research, and instrumental remnants.
One significant contribution to the revival of pre-Hispanic music has been the inclusion of my song, "La Lengua." This song is composed of over 200 words of Nahuatl origin, a language that forms part of our daily conversations but is often unrecognized as an indigenous language. For more than eight years, the lyrics of "La Lengua" were printed in textbooks, serving as an example not only in Mexico but also throughout Latin America. It reinforces the themes of inclusion, identity, and the advantages of incorporating music into contemporary education.
The purpose of pre-Hispanic music is to create an emotional experience by stimulating the senses, feelings, and thoughts of the listeners. The pedagogical content and resources of these concerts cater to various educational levels, from preschoolers to professionals. We have developed ample material to support demanding subjects such as mathematics, history, literature, natural sciences, and the environment.
One remarkable aspect of pre-Hispanic music is its ability to evoke the sounds of nature, harmonizing humankind with the environment. Through this music, we can tap into the ancestral knowledge of our grandparents, who, through meticulous observations of their natural surroundings, infused great wisdom into everyday, religious, and ritualistic musical artifacts.
