Introduction

When we see the faces of many criminals we come across in the news or on the internet, they may seem just like ordinary people. It's hard to believe that someone with such a twisted mind exists just by looking at their appearance. Today, we are going to introduce you to some of the most ruthless criminals in history and discuss how they managed to evade detection for so long.

Pearl Fernandez and Isaura

In 2005, Pearl Fernandez and her boyfriend Isaura welcomed their son Gabriel into the world. Shortly after his birth, the couple divorced, and Gabriel's custody was given to his great uncle Michael and his wife David. Gabriel lived with his uncles for four years until 2009 when he moved in with his grandparents at their request. Despite concerns expressed by family members about Gabriel's well-being, custody was given to Pearl Fernandez in 2012. Between 2005 and 2012, over 60 complaints were filed against Pearl and Isaura, leading to 8 investigations by the Los Angeles Child Protective Services and Child and Family Services departments. However, both agencies claimed that there was no evidence to support these complaints.

Sadly, Gabriel was found dead in his home eight months later. Both Pearl and Isaura were convicted of murder. Pearl received a life sentence, while Isaura was sentenced to death. But they were not the only ones involved in this case. Four social workers from the Los Angeles Child and Family Services department were accused of falsifying records and negligence in protecting Gabriel. Unfortunately, these charges were later dropped. In 2020, a six-part crime documentary was released on Netflix, which depicted the horrors Gabriel endured at the hands of his mother and her boyfriend.

Pedro Lopez

Known as the "Monster of the Andes," Pedro Lopez is a convicted Colombian criminal. It is believed that he turned to a life of crime due to a traumatic childhood experience. Lopez's first arrest occurred in 1969 for car theft, and he was sentenced to seven years in prison. While in prison, he was subjected to numerous sexual assaults, which prompted him to take revenge by killing three of his fellow inmates.

After his release, Lopez moved to Peru and began his killing spree, targeting young girls aged 9 to 12. When asked why he committed these heinous crimes, he claimed that he had lost his innocence at the age of 8 and decided to do the same to others. Lopez was arrested again shortly after, and he confessed to committing over 300 crimes. This confession shocked authorities, and initially, they did not believe him. However, when the bodies of his victims were discovered, it became clear that he was telling the truth.

Lopez was convicted and sentenced to 16 years in prison, which was the maximum sentence in Ecuador at that time. However, he was released two years early for good behavior in 1994. Shortly after his release, he was again arrested for illegally crossing the Ecuadorian border. He was deported to his home country, Colombia, and was sent to a psychiatric hospital instead of a prison due to his alleged mental instability. After three years in the hospital, he was deemed mentally competent and released in 1998. Since then, his whereabouts and whether he is still alive remain unknown.

Laurence Bittaker and Roy Norris

Laurence Bittaker and Roy Norris met in prison in 1979 and bonded over their shared obsession with committing sexual violence against women. They made a pact to reunite and carry out their murderous plans upon their release. In 1978, Norris was released on parole, and in January 1979, Bittaker followed suit.

Between June and October 1979, the duo kidnapped and brutally murdered five young girls in Southern California. In November 1979, Joseph Jackson, another inmate who had previously met Norris in the California Men's Colony, became involved with Bittaker and Norris. Norris confessed the crimes to Jackson and an attorney after they threatened to expose his secret activities. The attorney reported the confession, leading to a search of Bittaker and Norris' residences, where several incriminating tapes were found. Bittaker was sentenced to death for the five murders, while Norris received a life sentence. Bittaker died in prison in December 2019, while Norris passed away in February 2020.

Richard Ramirez

Known as the "Night Stalker," Richard Ramirez terrorized the public with a series of heinous crimes that caused panic and significantly increased gun sales. In June 1984, he committed his first known crime, sexually assaulting and murdering a 79-year-old woman. He waited approximately eight months before committing his next known crime. Ramirez primarily targeted homes in Los Angeles and the surrounding areas, where he would sexually assault and murder his victims. He gained notoriety for leaving Satanic symbols at the crime scenes and even drew a pentagram on his palm during his trial.

Ramirez's identity was uncovered when the police found a fingerprint on a car door handle that matched his. On August 30, 1985, his name and face were publicly revealed, leading to his arrest after a tip from a vigilant citizen. Ramirez attempted to steal a car but was surrounded by a crowd before the police arrived. He identified himself as a Satanist and made various references to the devil during his arrest. Ramirez had a significant number of followers who wrote him letters and visited him during his trial and imprisonment. He eventually married one of his admirers, Dorin, who worked as a magazine editor, in 1996. Ramirez died in prison from natural causes in 2013.
