First, President Biden stated that he would not negotiate unless Speaker McCarthy and House Republicans passed their own bill. So, they did. House Republicans passed a responsible bill, which is currently the only legislation that has the potential to pass even one chamber of Congress, let alone both. It is clear that President Biden and Senate Democrats have no bill or plan that can earn the required 60 votes. Speaker McCarthy and House Republicans are the only ones in Washington who have taken action to avoid default. The Senate majority may offer angry speeches, but they have zero plan. The only solution lies in presidential leadership.

Two Options for President Biden

President Biden has two options. First, he can endorse the responsible bill that House Republicans have already passed and instruct Republicans not to block it in the Senate. Alternatively, he can finally sit down with Speaker McCarthy and reach an agreement. Speaker McCarthy has been waiting at the grown-ups table for months, patiently waiting for President Biden to act like a leader. Whatever President Biden and Speaker McCarthy can agree to will easily pass the Senate. Any bill that does not meet this description appears to have no chance. It is encouraging to see President Biden backing down and finally inviting the speaker to negotiate. I accept his invitation to join the meeting myself and will continue to lend my support to the speaker.

Rolling Back Overreach and Red Tape

Apart from the issue of presidential leadership, there are two more opportunities for the Senate to roll back this administration's overreach and red tape. The first resolution, proposed by Senator Marshall, aims to remedy the painful side effects of The Endangered Species Act. It is holding American farms, ranches, and small businesses hostage to a seemingly insignificant animal called the Lesser Prairie Chicken. The population of this bird is already up since 2013, and local landowners and officials have established a successful voluntary partnership to balance conservation and prosperity. However, the Biden Administration wants to proceed with regulations that can threaten billions of dollars in agricultural production.

The second resolution addresses the challenge of economic competition with the Chinese Communist Party. President Biden's emergency proclamation last June allowed unfairly traded Chinese solar panels to enter U.S. markets without additional tariffs. This was done in favor of the Green New Deal agenda. The Commerce Department was already investigating Chinese producers for circumventing solar panel tariffs, but the administration gave in and let China off the hook. The Senate has the opportunity to join the House and take bipartisan action to freeze the president's emergency proclamation and hold China accountable for their unfair trade practices.
