Step 1: Switch to Desktop Mode

First, let's switch to desktop mode on your steam deck. From gaming mode, press the steam button, select power, and switch to desktop mode. This will allow us to download the necessary emulator and set up our Xbox 360 games.

Step 2: Download the Xenia Canary Emulator

Next, we need to download the Xenia Canary emulator. You can find the download link in the description of this video. Once downloaded, right-click on the file and unzip the contents to a convenient folder, such as your documents folder.

Step 3: Get Familiar with the Mudek Steam ROM Manager

To manage our Xbox 360 games, we will be using the Mudek Steam ROM Manager. Assuming you already have emu deck installed on your steam deck, open emu deck from the icon on your desktop. In the wizard, select "tools and stuff", and make sure to choose the "steam ROM manager" icon.

Step 4: Configure the Xenia Emulator in the Steam ROM Manager

In the steam ROM manager, scroll through the list of emulators on the left-hand side and toggle the Microsoft Xbox 360 Xenia emulator. Now, on the right-hand side, you will see various parameters available to us. The only one we need to focus on is the "executable" parameter. Select browse and navigate to the folder where you placed the Xenia Canary build earlier. Choose the Xenia Canary dot EXE file and press select file. Don't forget to press save at the bottom to save your changes.

Step 5: Transfer Your Xbox 360 Backups to the Emu Deck ROMs Folder

Now that we have our emulator set up, it's time to transfer our Xbox 360 backups, rips, or dumps to the emu deck ROMs folder. If you have emu deck installed to the internal drive, navigate to "home/emulation/ROMs/Xbox 360/ROMs" and place your ISO files for the Xbox 360 games here.

Step 6: Generate App List and Add Games to Steam Gaming Mode

With the steam ROM manager still open, select preview in the top left. Then, at the bottom, press "generate app list". This will allow the system to find cover art for our games. Once complete and you're happy with the cover art, press "save app list". It's important to note that whenever you add a new ISO backup to the 360 ROMs folder, you will need to perform the preview and generate app list steps again. This ensures that the cover art is assigned and the game is added to the steam gaming mode.

Step 7: Launch and Configure Your Xbox 360 Games

Now that we have added our games, let's return to gaming mode via the desktop. Press the steam button and navigate to your library, collections, and the Xbox 360 folder. You will see that your backups of Xbox 360 games have been added. But before launching the game, it's important to go to the settings, properties, and under compatibility, assign Proton 7.06. This step is crucial for the game to work properly. Now, you're ready to launch and enjoy your Xbox 360 games on your steam deck!

Conclusion

In conclusion, playing Xbox 360 games on your steam deck using Steam OS is an exciting and groundbreaking experience. While the performance may not be perfect for all games, you can expect a higher success rate by dual booting Windows 11 or 10 on the internal drive. By following the steps outlined in this tutorial, you can optimize your gaming experience and play your favorite Xbox 360 games on your steam deck. So, get ready to immerse yourself in a world of gaming greatness and have a fantastic time exploring the vast library of Xbox 360 games right at your fingertips. Happy gaming!
