They represent a choice between those who tried to ban the Turkish language in the call to prayer and those who allowed the call to prayer to resonate in Hagia Sophia. They symbolize the choice between those who closed down madrasas and confiscated copies of the Quran, and those who ensured that every mosque and community center offered Quranic education. These elections represent the choice between restricting the personal freedoms of our sisters who choose to wear headscarves and those who made it possible for headscarf-wearing women to hold public office. It is important to recognize that while we may have differences, these elections are about ensuring freedom of belief and providing equal educational opportunities to all.
