Today, as we commemorate National Police Week, it is a solemn duty to remember and honor the brave men and women who lost their lives in the line of duty. Their sacrifice should not be forgotten, and their names should be etched in our hearts forever.

An Unsettling Reality: Losses in Riverside County

Tragically, in my district of Riverside County, we have experienced the heart-wrenching loss of six sheriffs' department deputies since the year 2020. These fearless individuals, who committed themselves to preserving peace and upholding justice, paid the ultimate price. We must acknowledge their courage and stand together to ensure their memory lives on.

Reflecting on Unforgettable Heroes

Let us take a moment to remember the fallen heroes from our local police departments as well. Among them, officers Leslie Zarabny and Gil Vega of the Palm Springs Police Department left an indelible mark on our community. On October 8, 2016, we tragically lost these brave souls. Their memory serves as a constant reminder of the risks our law enforcement officers face daily.

Advocating for Support: Legislation to Honor our Heroes

In light of the sacrifices made by officers Arabny and Vega, as well as deputies Brett Harris, Darnell Calhoun, and Isaiah Cordero, I have taken it upon myself to author legislation that supports the families of fallen officers. It is crucial that we provide the necessary assistance and resources for these grieving families. They have endured immeasurable loss, and we owe it to them to ensure they receive the support they need during these trying times.

Strengthening the Public Safety Officers Benefits Program

Furthermore, I have been fervently advocating for the improvement of the Public Safety Officers Benefits Program. This program serves as a lifeline for the families of fallen officers, offering financial assistance and essential resources. By enhancing and expanding this program, we can ensure that our heroes' families are not left to bear the burden alone. They deserve our unwavering support, both in times of tragedy and throughout their lives.
