An Early Morning Adventure

My alarm was set to go off, signaling the start of a new day full of excitement and adventure. I had planned the perfect introduction to this article, centered around the sound of my alarm. But as life often goes, things didn't go exactly as planned. Rest assured, I am wide awake, fueled by the anticipation of what lies ahead. It's super early, and I am heading to the Seattle-Tacoma Airport for a flight that promises to be extraordinary.

Alaska Airlines: A Home Base in Washington State

Seattle-Tacoma Airport, also known as SeaTac, serves as the home base for Alaska Airlines. Now, you might be wondering why an airline called Alaska Airlines is based in Washington state. Well, my friend, that's a long story. If you're curious, feel free to look it up on Wikipedia. Some things are best left to the internet to explain. Besides, I am way too excited about this flight to delve into history lessons.

The MAX Experience: Bursting with Excitement

If you haven't already guessed from the title, today marks the inaugural flight of Alaska Airlines' 737 MAX. Now, you might be asking yourself why any sane person would willingly wake up at 4 am to catch a flight. Well, let me tell you, I am not a sane person. I am an aviation enthusiast, an av geek, if you will. And for someone like me, this is a dream come true.

Unlike other major airlines, such as United, American, and Southwest, Alaska Airlines never operated the MAX prior to its grounding in March of 2019. It wasn't until January 25th of this year that they took delivery of their first 737 MAX 9. And they have big plans for the future, with a fleet of 68 MAX 9s expected to be delivered by 2024.

Now, I know some people have criticized the MAX, but I won't apologize for my enthusiasm. It's a comfortable and visually appealing aircraft. So, when the opportunity arose to be on this inaugural flight, I couldn't resist.

Aboard the MAX: Exploring Alaska's Updated Economy Class

As boarding was announced, a stampede of av geeks, even more excited than I was, rushed to get a glimpse of the interior of Alaska's newest plane. And let me tell you, the updated economy class cabin did not disappoint. With 138 newly designed coach seats from Recaro, arranged in a 3-3 configuration, it was clear that Alaska Airlines had put a lot of thought into passenger comfort.

The Boeing Sky Interior, with its incredible mood lighting and spacious overhead bins, added to the overall ambiance of the cabin. Upon first glance, I was impressed. But I knew I needed to settle in and explore further before passing final judgment.

The economy cabin was boarded back to front, and although we didn't receive any sanitizing wipes, it wasn't a concern. After all, this was a brand new plane. The flight wasn't completely full, but it was close. The cabin crew efficiently got everyone seated, and we prepared for departure.

Taking Flight: Captivated by Comfort and Efficiency

As we taxied to the runway, the excitement grew. And finally, it was time to take to the skies on this 2-hour and 47-minute journey to San Diego. The captain's announcement filled the cabin, introducing the crew and expressing gratitude to all the employees who played a part in getting the MAX ready for revenue service.

The flight itself was smooth and enjoyable. The economy class seats proved to be incredibly comfortable, with ample legroom and memory foam cushions. The adjustable tray table and tablet holder made it easy to work or relax during the flight. And although the Wi-Fi wasn't available yet, the stunning views outside my window more than made up for it.

A small snack and drink service was provided, with each passenger receiving a Biscoff cookie and a beverage of their choice. It's worth noting that Alaska Airlines had scaled down their food and beverage service for health reasons. But the limited selection didn't detract from the overall experience.

Throughout the flight, I couldn't help but appreciate the neutral colors and relaxed atmosphere created by Alaska's new interior design. Although I missed the Native American patterns found on their older planes, the cabin still exuded a sense of calm and serenity.

A Memorable Landing and Final Thoughts

As we approached San Diego, it was time to prepare for landing. The crew, as always, remained professional and friendly, ensuring everyone's safety and comfort. The flight had been a success, showcasing the capabilities and comfort of the 737 MAX.

Now, I know there are concerns and criticisms surrounding the MAX. But let me tell you a little story. Later that day, on a different flight aboard a 757, a small fire broke out in the lavatory. It just goes to show that incidents can happen on any aircraft, and it's important not to jump to conclusions.

So, how do you feel about Alaska Airlines introducing the 737 MAX into service? Are you excited to try it out or hesitant to step on board? Let me know your thoughts.

As we disembarked the aircraft, wearing our face masks and following safety protocols, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible experience I had just had. Alaska Airlines had once again exceeded my expectations, leaving me with a sense of awe and gratitude.

Thank you, Alaska Airlines, for a flight filled with excitement, comfort, and a glimpse into the future of aviation. Until we meet again in the skies, safe travels to all.
